Support from Navy for Pemex After Pirate Attacks

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) will provide surveillance support to Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) after reports of 'pirates' assaulting platforms in Campeche. During her 'morning' conference on Monday, February 17, Sheinbaum specified: 'The Secretariat of the Navy will be supporting in case of any situation that arises on any of the platforms and the surveillance of Pemex.'

The oil union reported that two workers were injured after an assault by a group of 'pirates' on the Zapp Delta platform. Among the stolen items were personal belongings and valuables of the employees, in addition to leaving them with serious injuries.

The 47th section of the oil union informed that the affected workers have already been transferred to Ciudad del Carmen to receive the necessary medical attention thanks to the intervention of union leaders. The injured are being treated at the general hospital of Petróleos Mexicanos.

A group of armed men boarded the oil platform Zaap Delta on the night of Friday, taking control of the facilities belonging to the Ku Maloob Zaap complex. They remained on the platform until the early hours of Saturday while personnel made distress calls during the boarding.

Workers on the Pool-Alfa platform in Campeche began a hunger strike on February 10 to denounce the poor quality of food service on the oil platforms. They claim that Pemex has not fulfilled the payment of contracts with the food company, resulting in poor quality food and health problems for workers.

Employees have filed complaints regarding the situation to the Deputy Secretary of Labor for Pool-Alfa, Arturo González, and to the Joint Commission of Safety and Hygiene. They pointed out that despite having sent complaints for at least six years, they have not received any response, which has negatively impacted their health.

They request to be provided with fresh, quality, and sufficient food to supply the storage, as they are currently empty. The head of Pemex, Víctor Rodríguez, assured that the case is being addressed and that dialogue tables have been established with the employees to discuss their requests.
